According to the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) 2022, India ranked 180 out of 180 countries, indicating critical challenges in air quality, biodiversity, and climate change response. Air pollution alone is responsible for nearly 1.7 million deaths annually in India, as per a Lancet study.

Deforestation, urban sprawl, and pollution are accelerating the loss of biodiversity. India has already lost over 90% of its original forest cover in the past century. The Wildlife Institute of India notes that over 25% of India's mammals are at risk of extinction, while wetlands are disappearing at a rate of 2–3% annually.

Climate change has led to extreme weather patterns — deadly floods, prolonged droughts, and rising temperatures. In 2023 alone, India experienced over 240 extreme weather events, causing more than 3,000 deaths and billions in damages.
